The charms and landscapes from all the Greece together in one place...
Mont Enos (Ainos)
Kefalonia (or Kefallinia or Céphalonie) is the biggest of Ionian islands, situated on north-west from Greeks coasts.
It unfolds on 907km² for a population of 36500 inhabitants. Its coasts extend on 237km offering around forty sandy or pebble beaches.
The island of Kefalonian, unlike the other Ionian islands, offer a variety of peninsular and continental landscapes. From the dense forests of Mont Enos - which culminates at 1628m - to the less verdant and even wild and desert landscapes of the plain of Lixouri.
On north, for example, we find rollings hills covered with olive trees, and Cypres which will remind you the landscapes of Tuscany. While in the South, stretches of coastline interspersed with beaches are more like the nearby Peloponnese.
The island is also full of caves filled with fascinating limestone formations as well as monasteries and ancient Venetian fortresses.
Bay of Argostoli
To the main body of the island are attached three peninsulas which give its particular character to Cephalonia.
To the north, parallel to the island of Ithaca, is the peninsula of Erissos. Which quiet villages are mainly located in mountainous areas. Only a 3 km stretch of sea separates Erissos from Ithaca.
To the west, the Paliki peninsula in the center of which is Lixouri. This extension forms a long bay separating Lixouri and Argostoli, the two main cities of the island. However, these last two cities are regularly served by ferries shuttle between them.
To the southwest is the Lasi Peninsula with its capital Argostoli, which is also the capital of the island and its main point of entry. Since this is where the local airport is located.
Lassi one of the main tourist centers is located to the west, although the village of Skala, located further south is stealing, little by little, the star.
Assos castle
Keep in mind that the distances in Kefalonia are quite large: between Poros to the south and Fiskardo to the north, the distance is 96km, while that between Sami east of Lixouri in the west is 44km.
Although there are bus connections between these places, these are mainly for the inhabitants, so it is preferable to travel by car and motorbike or if you prefer by kayak or by pleasure boat.
Cephalonia has many beautiful beaches. The bays and coves give birth to its particular contour while the more rocky coasts offer more intimate beaches of gravel or sand. So to the northeast, you can find the Bay of Myrthos with its beautiful beach made of sand and white gravel.
From here you can see the village of Assos, a small town located at the end of the peninsula and dominated by an imposing Venetian fortress. Further north is the village of Fiskardo with its Venetian style and its port where small fishing boats, luxurious yachts and cruise ships meet.
The southern coasts offer the most beautiful beaches especially favored by the "Caretta-Caretta" sea turtles, which are under the supervision of a group of volunteers protecting this local species.
